miart 2023: the 27th edition comes to a close

miart 2023 has reported excellent sales, an increase in the attendance of national and international collectors in addition to journalists and art professionals, and a high number of visitors. .

This year, the Fiera Milano Foundation Acquisition Fund selected works by Râzvan Anton, Javier Barrios, Elisabetta Benassi, Pierpaolo Campanini, Wendt Eyckermans, Soshiro Matsubara, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, Nora Turato and Tobias Zielony.

Mark your calendars for the 28th miart from 12 to 14 April 2024.

Milan, 16 April 2023 - The twenty-seventh edition of miart, Milan's international modern and contemporary art fair organised by Fiera Milano and directed for the third year by Nicola Ricciardi, came to a close today.

Continuing in the vein of musical metaphors, miart 2023 built its imagery around the word Crescendo: a term that in musical language indicates the gradual increase in intensity of sound; related to the fair, it was able to emphasise a progressive increase in participation and audience and the desire to continue on this path beyond 2023

From the first few hours after opening on Thursday 13 April and throughout its entire duration, the fair was very lively, with an increase in the attendance of international VIPs including collectors, art consultants, curators and directors of private foundations and Italian and foreign museums, as well as an increase in the participation of the Italian and international press providing widespread media coverage, and a considerable increase in the number of people attending.

The 169 participating galleries were very well received, and there was a significant increase in the international scope of the event, which saw a 40% increase in the number of exhibitors with international spaces, with the total number of exhibitors coming from 27 countries worldwide. Appreciation was also given to the decision to continue with three sections - Established, Decades, and Emergent - with the aim of presenting a clear and comprehensible distribution of space.

The 2023 edition stood out for the quality of the works on display, for the careful curatorial research, for the museum-level exhibition projects, but above all for the fair's ability to go beyond traditional boundaries by creating unprecedented collaborations and fostering relations and exchange with the city, its institutions and its citizens.

Inspired by the Crescendo concept, the contents of the fair for the first time rooted itself within the city, collaborating with many public and private institutions.

For example, on Saturday 15 April, Triennale Milano hosted miart LIVE at Triennale Milano: a series of encounters resulting from the collaboration between miart and the institution in Milan, featuring big names from the world of culture such as Massimiliano Gioni and Beatrice Trussardi, Jonathan Monk and Angharad Williams, Gianni Pettena and Italo Rota, and developed around the theme of art's ability to appeal to other places and disciplines far removed from traditional containers. The collaboration between the two institutions is also underlined by the new edition of FOG - Triennale Milano Performig Arts, which during the days of the fair presented the Italian premieres of Jeremy Nedd and Impilo Mapantsula (12-13 April) and Dewey Dell (15-16 April).

The number of prizes and commissions to support the commitment and vision of the participating galleries and artists also increased for the 2023 edition. Each of these prizes underlines how active each of the Partners is in supporting arts and culture. A prestigious list of renowned curators and museum directors with international profiles made up the juries called upon to decide the prize winners.

9 works were selected from the Fiera Milano Foundation's Acquisition Fund. Joining Foundation President Enrico Pazzali in the selection was a jury composed of Diana Bracco (President of the jury, Member of the Executive Committee of the Fiera Milano Foundation, Milan), Ralph Rugoff, (Director, Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre, London), Dirk Snauwaert (Director, WIELS, Brussels) and Bettina Steinbrügge (General Manager, Mudam Luxembour).

On the occasion of a not-to-be-missed event for enthusiasts and collectors like miart, the international modern and contemporary art fair in Milan, the Milano Fiera Foundation is proud to be able to reaffirm its support for culture and the art market in a tangible way. In addition to their aesthetic qualities, the works acquired this year through the Acquisition Fund have great cultural value”, explained Diana Bracco, member of the Executive Committee of the Fiera Milano Foundation and President of the international jury that selected the works that will enrich the Foundation’s collection -. With a total contribution of more than 100,000 Euro, the works chosen by the jury, which I had the pleasure of chairing, included painting, photography, sculpture, and printmaking, and belonged to artists of various generations represented by Italian and foreign galleries”.
